How to Troubleshoot When iPhone Quick Start Doesn't Work

  • Daily

Leave it as a note.

When switching from one iPhone to another, one method for data transfer is Quick Start. This method transfers data via Bluetooth, and the operational steps are simple; however, I wasn't able to get it to work.

If the software isn't the latest version, the procedure for data transfer will only work after updating, and in my case, the software update took about 10 hours and still hadn't completed.

Solutions

During the initial setup, the following options for data transfer will appear:

  • Restore from iCloud backup
  • Restore from Mac or PC
  • Transfer directly from iPhone
  • Transfer data from Android
  • Don't transfer apps and data

Here, I selected 'Don't transfer apps and data' and completed the initial setup to the end. After that, I went to 'Settings → General → Software Update' on the iPhone and completed just the update. This can be done in about 20 minutes, and there is a progress bar, which provides reassurance.

Once the OS update is complete, you can reinitialize your iPhone by going to 'Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings.'

By the way, in the case of eSIM, you can choose to 'Erase data while keeping eSIM' or 'Erase data and delete eSIM.' I was worried about what would happen if I erased the eSIM, so I chose to keep it while initializing. (Looking back, it seems like either option would have been fine.)

The reason for reinitializing after completing the initial setup is that the OS will return to a fresh state while remaining up to date. This allows you to skip the 'Software Update' step in the flow of 'Software Update → Data Transfer' during Quick Start.

This time, I selected 'Transfer directly from iPhone' from the initial setup data transfer options.

Data transfer alone should be completed smoothly in about an hour.

What Happens When It's Completed?

Once the data transfer via Quick Start is complete, everything on the iPhone is copied exactly as it was.

This includes all photos and apps being transferred.

And that’s a happy ending.
