Avalanche of Public Opinion

  • Thinking

Humans have a nature to want to maintain balance. When they are excessively out of balance, movements arise to bring them back to the center.

Recently, due to social media, many people simultaneously attempt to return outliers to their rightful positions like an avalanche. The sheer volume can push these outliers far beyond their rightful places.

On the other hand, if this goes too far, movements will arise again to revert to the original state. This time, a surge of opinions from the supportive side will increase, creating a counter avalanche.

This repeats like a pendulum until it settles at a midpoint.

The more out of balance the initial point is, the larger the swing will be, taking more time to converge.

I believe it is important to reflect on oneself and let go of certain things before an avalanche occurs, returning oneself to where they should be.
